Many methods have been identified for the preparation of thin, single-crystal films (Bax, 1984; McClelland, 1980; Smith, 1983; and, Yablonovitch, 1987). The costs of processing single-crystal semiconductors need not preclude the exploitation of their obviously superior performance. Table 3 summarizes a comparison of projected large-scale manufacturing costs for three photovoltaic technologies based on amorphous silicon, wafered silicon, and crystalline GaAs thin-films. The columns for amorphous and crystalline silicon were estimated using methodology developed by the DOE Program (Jackson, 1983).
